Most home recording advice comes from two places: gear salesmen trying to hit a quota, or hobbyists who are just repeating what they heard on a forum.

I started The Practical Home Studio to provide a third option: Professional expertise applied to the reality of a home environment. I don’t believe you need a million-euro console to make a hit, but I do believe you need to understand the physics of sound and the discipline of a professional workflow. My goal is to help you cut through the marketing noise and build a studio that produces actual results.

From Hollywood to the Home Studio

My journey into sound began in 1993 at the Guitar Institute of Technology (GIT) in Los Angeles. That foundation in music theory and performance eventually led me into the world of high-end professional audio, where I have been recording, mixing, and producing since 2012.

I have spent thousands of hours in world-class facilities, and I’ve learned exactly what separates a “demo” from a “professional production.”

Why Trust This Site?

I don’t just talk about gear; I use it to meet demanding professional deadlines every single day. My experience is rooted in the highest stakes of the industry:

  • Award-Winning Sound: I am a two-time SAFTA (South African Film and Television Awards) winner for Best Sound Design.

  • Television & Broadcast: I have mixed over 400 television episodes and handled countless studio productions for television and global advertising.

  • Studio Records: I have recorded three full-length artist studio albums and performed as a session musician on five others.

When I give advice on how to treat a room or choose a compressor, it isn’t based on a “hunch”—it’s based on a career spent delivering broadcast-ready audio for the biggest screens in the country.

The Practical Mission

A “Serious” home studio is a powerful thing, but only if you know how to use it. Whether you are a songwriter trying to capture your first album or a producer looking to win your own awards, I’m here to show you the shortest, most practical path to professional sound.

I’ve made the mistakes, I’ve won the awards, and I’ve put in the hours. Now, I’m sharing that blueprint with you.
